Published: Mon 21 January 2013

An updated TCL report called Emerging Market Data Centre Pricing Report – 2013 to 2018  finds that the 11 countries surveyed continue to experience growth spurred from new Data Centre facility development and increases in pricing over the 5 year period to the end of 2018.

The new revised report – which is an extended and updated version of the earlier 2011 report - produces the findings of a survey of 136 Data Centre facilities from 102 Data Centre providers across 11 Emerging Market countries(including Albania,Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Turkey & the Ukraine).

Out of the 11 Country markets surveyed the four largest are Russia, Turkey, the Ukraine and Bulgaria. And Russia alone is set to account for half of all the Data Centres raised floor space in the 11 countries as of the end of 2013.

The majority of the countries in the report now have an established Data Centre market with multiple operators and plans for expansion by both Carrier Based and Carrier Neutral providers.

The report highlights the important trends in the 11 Data Centre Emerging Markets which include:

    • The size of Data Centres are still relatively small - In the 11 emerging markets Data Centres have an average size of just over 800 square metres, and the average size is markedly smaller than in established markets –  but with the largest Data Centre facility having around 5,000 up to 10,000 square metres of raised floor space.

    • But Data Centre space is set to increase significantly over the next 5 years – Across the 11 countries Technical Data Centre space is forecast to rise from 109,000 square metres to 143,000 square metres (an increase of 30 per cent over the 5 year period from the end of 2013 to the end of 2018).

    • And Data Centre pricing is also set to increase over the 5 year period - Average standard rack space rental is forecast to increase by 10 per cent over the same 5 year period (from 855 Euro per month to 928 Euro per month) – with the most expensive pricing – of 1300 Euro – seen in the Russian market.

    • More Carrier Neutral Data Centres are entering the market – Traditionally the Carrier Neutral Data Centre segment has taken off only after the Country market has reached a critical mass of providers. Over the past 12 month period new Carrier Neutral facilities have been introduced in Russia, Albania & Serbia which provide high specification collocation and hosting as the markets approach maturity.

    • Many Data Centres are following varied Business Models – Data Centre providers in the report are pursuing a number of Business Models, and are offering housing and collocation aimed at the telecoms, ISP, Web hosting & IT services segments.

The growth of the Data Centre segment in Russia underlines the rapid development of the IT sector which is being targeted by Government and foreign investors as a strategic imperative to boost wider economic growth in the country.

But the development of Data Centre space in the emerging markets indicates that high specification housing and hosting facilities are no longer confined to the traditional markets ofWestern Europe.
