London - A new report published by TCL called the Premium Data Centre 2012 – Pricing, Business Model and Services finds that the Premium Data Centre (which can support high density IT applications of up to 20 kw per rack) is set to grow as a proportion of the overall Data Centre market - growing from 28 per cent at the end of 2012 up to 40 per cent by the end of 2017 - across the 15 European countries covered in the survey.

Both Carrier Neutral and Carrier Based Data Centres are seeing growth in space and pricing as a result of demand from a range of telecoms, content and enterprise users, but the Premium Data Centre represents the fastest growth segment with a need for Cloud Computing and high density blade servers.

The TCL Premium Data Centre 2012 - Pricing, Business Model and Services report finds that the Premium Data Centre will account for a growing share of the overall Data Centre market from 28 per cent up to 40 per cent across the 15 European countries surveyed.

The report is based on a survey of 82 Premium Data Centre facilities across the 15 countries and incorporates the following main statistics which include:
  •  Total Premium Data Centre raised floor space (2012) - 637,190 square metres
  • Average raised floor space per Premium Data Centre (2012) - 7,952 square metres
  • Average mains power fed into the Premium Data Centre (2012) - 10 MW
  • Average power available in the Premium Data Centre per square metre (2012) - 2.7 kW
  • Average power available per standard 19” rack (2012) - 6.6 MW
  • Average power available per optional 19” rack (2012) - 20.3 kW
  • Average price per standard 19” rack - 1,292 Euro per month
  •  Average price per standard square metre –-517 Euro per month

The survey also includes a 5-year forecast - from the end of 2012 to the end of 2017 - for the growth in Premium Data Centre raised floor space, and as a proportion of total Data Centre space, standard rack space pricing and per square metre costs for each of the 15 countries in the report.

Although a relatively new phenomenon - most high density Premium Data Centres in the survey have been built in the last 2 year period - the highest number of high density Premium Data Centre facilities is to be found in the Netherlands (with 11 facilities).

The highest proportion of total high density raised floor space is available in France, Germany and Luxembourg – all 3 countries have seen a wide range of new Premium Data Centre facilities constructed, with new high density Data Centre space being introduced to each country market.

The Premium Data Centre segment is also undergoing change with the adoption of new more sustainable technology which is aimed at reducing energy consumption and the Power Usage Effectiveness metric, and offering supplementary services – such as a cloud computing platform – to the core services of connectivity, collocation and housing.
